That 'engineer' ain't no stinking rose!

An engineer by any other name would be oh so sweet
BY MIKE CASSIDY
Mercury News Staff Writer
DOCTORS get to be called physicians. Lawyers can be attorneys. And engineers? Well, an engineer is an engineer.

You might not have known this is a problem. You might not be an engineer. You're certainly not Martin Gottlieb, an engineer who wishes there were something else you could call him.

''If you think of beautician and barber,'' says Gottlieb, ''they have synonyms.'' (Hairdresser, stylist, coiffeur, coiffeuse.)

Who actually worries about this stuff? Gottlieb for one. He is president of the American Institute of Engineers, an outfit he started with 17 others back in 1990. Now, he says, the group represents 1,200 members who call themselves engineers and would like the option of calling themselves something else.
