Problems that occur on 1 Jan will be hard to explain away as anything BUT a y2k bug. Most problems occurring now (as with UW's payroll) just don't come with an explanation. For example, I learned of one mail order company that was entering credit expiration as 12/99 or earlier while they awaited the fixes. Minor annoyance, at least until next January rolls around!

Yes, manipulating the date is the main thing you do, but with precautions (i.e. backups) so you don't hose your system. I haven't had to do too much y2k work myself, thank gawd...

Some of the problems that occur well after Jan 1st will be caused by installing or updating applications that erroneously overwrite new libraries with older libraries due to out-of-order date recognition(this can make OTHER applications that use those shared libraries suddenly fail). You might want to think twice about updating anything for a couple months in '00 until enough other people have suffered to spare you the pain. This will especially be a problem if you need to install (or re-install) some app you're using that is pre 1998 or so.
