Stock cannot be shorted until 30 days after the IPO.

OT - Mike, it's a common myth, not true. Some folks on SI short IPOs on the very first day, just ask A@P. Regular folks can short 3 days after the IPO. I recently shorted RBAK, 2 weeks post-ipo, and ADFC 3 weeks post-ipo.

Regards,

Tom

Mike, IPO can not be bought on margin for first 30 days. You can however purchase in type-1 cash and then move to t-2 margin (fully paid for) on settlement day. Shares to short must be borrowed from a margin account. This makes IPO shares scarce the first 30 days but not impossible to get. I've shorted IPO's on t+3 many times. And very profitably I might add.

that statement is incorrect...

sorry- hadda comment.. I keep seeing that all over the web these days.. cant short for 30 days..

I have no problems shorting any IPOs.. or I should say on the second or third day- sometimes the first few days there is no supply.. and believe me, I dont have an offshore account or any other 'angle' to get in- just using a regular old broker...
