I don't know if it is still like this, but in Germany they used to have a channel that was all commercials, and people would watch it. We rely on commercials more than we think to keep us informed about new products, sales, etc..

Gemstar and Microsoft are deeply into the ad revenue idea for settops. SFA, GI, United Video and Pioneer have all gone to court against Gemstar rather than pay its exorbitant royalties. What did MSFT do? It paid Gemstar $45 million and then asked for a cut of future royalties AND advertising revenues. Very shrewd Bill. He has an interest in seeing the advertising model pay off. Money makes the bits flow round.

I tried to pull up the following Fortune article online, but it is not archived. Here's the title of the article, which is on page 32 of the February 15 1999 issue of Fortune.

"In early 1998, Gemstar signed a cross-licensing agreement with Microsoft, which paid Gemstar $45 million up front with the promise of future royalties and a share of ad revenues. This summer NBC signed on as a charter advertiser."
