what tickles me is the fact that when the irs fired its top guy, and the new blood sucking head came in, HE announced:
...they were giving up on the installation of the new y2k compliant system,
...they were severely curtailing audits (the old system had to be put back into service and they didn't have the survelliance data availability under that old system being reinstalled),
...they would be doing all data entry by hand instead of scanning (as they had hoped to do with the new software/programming they'd been trying to implement for over 7 years),
...they were no where near being Y2K compliant.

i remember the new irs' man's candor because it made a wrinkle in my memory like that burlington northern/coal won't make it press release did.

too bad SI doesn't allow one to selectively pull up old posts by key words any older than 30 days or so. some of these oldies but goodies in the candor department deserve to be re-run.

since the govt is going to cease to function effectively jan 1, we as a family are going to submit our tax return before the end of the year with proof of mailing certification from the post office. then they can screw up all they want. i won't be in trouble because i can prove i filed (thank you post office) and i won't be in trouble for non-disclosing of income, which will land one in the pokey.

furthermore, it is my firmly held belief that we will have foisted on us the quickest tax change legislation ever voted on about the time the govt grinds to a halt because tax collections are so screwed up.
and that goes for local, federal and state govt tax collectors.

we will see a flat tax with a mortgage exemption within the first 6 months of 2000 or i miss my bet.

i'm young enough to remember the 'locked' tax collection box that used to hang on the side of the big old brass cash registers of the 40s. that was where the sales clerk put in however many cents of each sale dollar was required by law from each purchase. then someone came around (horse and buggy?) and collected the contents of all those little attached boxes with the slots in the top.

i'm glad i'm young enough to remember living in y2k compliant times.
these younger folks are going to be in a world of hurt in less than 200 days. (sure wish i still hand my 48 plymouth sedan!) great car for a 'wild teenager' as i recall.
