Chip recovery continues with sales up slightly in April, says SIA A service of Semiconductor Business News, CMP Media Inc. Story posted 3:30 p.m. EST/12:30 p.m. PST, 6/10/99 SAN JOSE -- As evidence that the semiconductor industry recovery is still going, worldwide sales of semiconductors in April were up 7.3% from April 1998 totals, to $11.21 billion, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) reported here today. The month's sales were barely above those of March, when global chip sales were $11.15 billion, based on a three-month moving average, making for an increase of just 0.4%. However, since March is traditionally a strong sales month, the slow month-to-month growth could actually be encouraging. "This month's global sales numbers show the continuing growth of our industry," said SIA president George Scalise. "We are pleased to report that we are right in-line with our recently released forecast of industry sales for 1999." On Tuesday, the SIA released its mid-year industry forecast, predicting that 1999 chip sales would be 12.1% higher than in 1998 (see June 8 story). The new forecast predicts that the overall growth in chip sales will continue to exceed the 1999 increase during the next three years. The SIA Global Sales Report, tabulated with figures from the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics organization, showed slight increases in most markets from April to March. Chip sales in the Americas during April improved 0.5% from the previous month, and Japan's sales were up 0.7%. The Asia-Pacific market posted a 2.1% increase in sales from March. Europe, however, suffered a sales decline in April of 1.8% from March. The growth rates were higher when compared to a year ago, however. Japan's chip sales grew 10.7% while semiconductor revenues increased 9.7% in April compared to the same month in 1998. Growth rates were weaker in the Americas and Europe, which increased 6.7% and 2.9% respectively (see table below).
