AOL Q4 growth at low end of range: Merrill

NEW YORK, June 10 (Reuters) - Internet service provider America Online Inc. will see subscriber growth for the fiscal fourth quarter at the low end of its forecasts, Merrill Lynch analyst Henry Blodget said Thursday.

In a report, he said America Online had told Wall Street analysts to expect 750,000 to 850,000 new subscribers in the quarter which ends this month.

''Based on conversations with management over the last few days, we believe that AOL's net adds for the quarter will come in at the low end of the ... range -- perhaps between 750,000 and 800,000,'' Blodget wrote.

He had estimated a gain of 813,000 subscribers. America Online is the biggest online service provider, with more than 17 million subscribers.

Some investors may be disappointed by the growth in subscribers, he wrote. ''The company missed its subscriber target in this quarter last year, however, and it didn't hurt the stock.''

Speculation that America Online's subscriber growth for the quarter would be lower than expected has helped drive down the stock price.

The shares were off 4-7/16 Thursday at 106-9/16, almost 37 percent off their record close in early April.

Subscriber growth in Europe and Japan was markedly weaker than expected. America Online likely will add 75,000 international subscribers, well below Blodget's forecast of 200,000.

However, North American growth was strong. ''The company is likely to easily exceed our estimate of 613,000.''

Blodget was still comfortable with his revenue estimate of $1.3 billion and earnings forecast of $0.10 a share.
