Ron and Thread,

As you stated, digital photography needs to be appreciated first hand to understand the magical powers it possesses. I feel sad for any SanDisk investor who has not experienced the excitement of developing your first "keeper" on your desktop. It offers an entirely new window on the future of flash memory and the wonder of the technology.

Bruno,

We forgive you. I am also tainted. I received a free 8 MB Kingston card in the mail today along with my free Microsoft mapping program for my handheld PC. I feel like a traitor, but I didn't spend anything on it. Each time I open my wallet it will be for a SanDisk product or for a device using CompactFlash.

re: Lexar

I believe the CFA is deliberating on the future of the USB interface and whether it should be embedded in the card. I still believe it is a fairly insignificant enhancement given the functionality of the ImageMate and other CF readers. I suspect it may have a place for other applications relating to the advantages of the USB port over slower serial and parallel connections.
