Worldwide Semiconductor Sales Rose 7.3% in April, SIA Says Worldwide Semiconductor Sales Rose 7.3% in April, SIA Says San Jose, California, June 10 (Bloomberg) -- Worldwide sales of computer chips rose 7.3 percent in April to $11.2 billion as sales in Japan jumped, according to an industry trade group. The sales increase from April 1998 shows the industry is well on its way to a recovery after posting three years of declining sales, the Semiconductor Industry Association said. April sales rose 0.4 percent from a month earlier, the SIA said. Global chip sales are expected to rise 12 percent this year, led by communications products and the popularity of the Internet. The industry is recovering from a slump caused by slowing demand for personal computers, falling prices and excess manufacturing capacity. In April, sales in Japan rose 10.7 percent to $2.44 billion from a year ago, and sales in the Asia-Pacific region rose 9.7 percent to $2.66 billion. Sales in the Americas rose 6.7 percent to $3.63 billion. Sales in Europe rose 2.9 percent to $2.48 billion from a year earlier, but fell 1.8 percent from March.
