Interesting post but I've never been a big fan of "industry" reports on piracy. They are basically analogous to the bank reports given to insurance companies after robberies back in the early 1900s (and later....probably not prominent with current US banks given the amount of control, but alas, I really do not know much about current bank security)....inflated for self interest and gain.

"In the 3rd world countries, we lost $1.5 billion in sales, which amounts to 4.5X their combined GDP..." <g>

The software industry tends to love these reports as well, with the IDSA being the prominent pusher of that propaganda.

Good research, Gary. Thanks for posting the article. The article mentions that "One way the industry is attempting to counter the growing digital music threat from the Internet and other devices is via the Secure Digital Music Initiative, a group of about 150
companies from the music and technology industry racing to
develop standards for ensuring copyright protection of digital
music either downloaded from the Internet or transferred from
other media. While technical details have yet to be completed, the system is designed to be ready in time so that portable music devices
can incorporate the technology in time for Christmas"
• What role do you think the Lucent/EDIG epac system will play in this initiative? Thanks in advance for your response.
