Can you explain the pros and cons of hand placement vs. a computer-generated layout? What was the reason for AMD to do the layout by hand?

The history of this comes from Alpha, which was full custom- meaning all placement and routing was hand done. K7 was a little simpler, as they allowed the tools to do the routing for them.

Hand placement is based on the theory that humans can get better timing results than automatic place and route tools. I'm not convinced this is true, and I've seen some evidence to indicate otherwise- but who can argue with Dirk's success?
