Why would AMD do the K7 layout by hand? It's like writing a huge application in assembler. It may run faster but is a pain in the neck to maintain. And how about going to 6 metal? Will all this work be wasted?

I assumed that the K7 used the same 6 metal layer process as the K6. That was one of the major problems with the original NexGen design - that it required a new (at the time) process.
