I agree that ATM has superior qualities when it comes to traffic prioritization, however IP also has some newer techologies which will approach the QoS in ATM. RSVP, DifServ, RTP, IP Precedence all will allow different traffic types to be prioritized...in a much more granular fashion than the queuing mechanisms available in ATM.

My belief, which is held by many, is that ATM will be relegated to the core of networks...eventually (10-20 years out) being supplanted by IP over Optical networks....using Sonet framing. Again, this is only my guess based upon industry direction.
