OT- DELL ripoff memory chips in Notebooks

DELL really reams you when you order a 7000 or 3500 Inspiron charging as much as $100 for each additional 32MB or RAM you want. We all know that RAM now cost under $40 for 32MB DIMMs, so I ask you all; can I just get the standard 1-DIMM of 32MB, rip it out, or add to it, my own comparable $70 64MB DIMM, for 64-96MB RAM? First hand experienced responses only, please.
