I think you may be taking the "black box" language too literally. He was a physicist. He has said repeatedly that he has held many positions in the markets including training traders, a stock broker, etc...

I wouldn't take "black box" to mean anything other than he was privy to the model, not that he was a "sys admin". And he might not be being forthright.
