Jane Austen, Anthony Trollope and Yeats.

If my house were burning down I would save our family pictures, my jewelry (can I count all of it as one and save it all- I hope so) and my wedding box with all my mementos in it- (including all the love letters my husband wrote me when he was away from me at field camp when we were in college, the first locks I cut of my children's hair, and some other stuff I could never replace.)

Jesus, Buddha and Lao-Tse, but they all would have to speak the same language as I do, or otherwise be able to communicate with each other in a way that I could understand. What a fascinating conversation that would be!

I'd save my kids first, my husband second, and myself third. If I were home alone, I'd grab the most valuable thing that was within easy reach, before I left, lickity-split. If the house were burning slowly enough for me to collect my valuables, I'd get the cats and dog out, if I could. They aren't as important as my personal photos, diaries and jewelry, but I'd owe it to them.
