Songwriters don't need your respect: they get mechanical royalties, now up to 7.1 cents per minute (for the first five minutes) per unit sold. That's why the guy who wrote "Monster Mash", while not wealthy, never had to work again after the song became a perennial novelty staple.

It's pretty hard for the record labels to screw the songwriter out of a legally-mandated royalty, though I'm sure they try.
