Forward elements of British forces, the first NATO peacekeepers to move into Kosovo on Saturday morning, reached Pristina several hours later and quickly made their way to the airport.

Their objective, Vardonc said, was to lay the groundwork for turning the airport into the command post for Lieutenant-General Sir Mike Jackson of Britain, head of NATO's Kosovo force.

But that mission was complicated by the presence of Russian troops who beat them to the airstrip. The arrival of a 200-strong Russian unit caught NATO nations by surprise.

Vardonc said an unknown number of NATO and Russian forces had ''combined'' control of the airport for now following the withdrawal of Serb forces under a pullout agreement reached on Wednesday. ''There are no tensions there,'' he said. ''Things are calm.'' >>
