Exactly, Christopher! Did you read The Great Divorce, which I have given to a number of friends? It gives a new and interesting understanding of hell--what small uglinesses we can't give up. And how sin is a corruption of the good and the healthy--as, for example, the wonderful example of how the corruption of healthy desire into a nasty sort of lust is all that keeps one character from "the hills" and how when he grits his teeth and throws the little whispering reptile (a nasty form of lust) off his shoulder, it becomes a stallion that carries him into the mountains at a hard gallop?

I would have to agree with the consensus that this book must be experienced, and a synopsis would certainly fall short.
