you could have a very minor part of the economy using the net for shopping

The absolute quantities are small (but very real) and the growth rates astoundingly large. That pretty much defines everything that is internet, including Excite@Home.

Every new medium of communication takes what seems like eons to develop and make its impact on society. People change very slowly. The internet is happening far faster than any other significant technological revolution in history, yet it *feels* slow to us. In the light of history 20 years is the blink of an eye. Instant change.

The only question is whether investors will be able to continue to look 10-20 years into the future when the internet is as central to life as television is today. ...Only if advertising pays though...

Darleen,

I could be off here but i was thinking net commerce is something to the tune of 1 billion dollars and net employment is i believe about 1.2 million ...

Cisco Systems is sponsoring measurements of the Internet economy being done by the University of Texas. Yesterday they unveiled the web site showing the stats which will be updated quarterly.

Take a look at internetindicators.com

I use the net but do not shop on it.

Hi, your neighbor from Palos Verdes.

Try once and you will get addicted. Try several times, it becomes the only way to shop for certain goods and services. It's shocking.
I have to tell friends to buy Home Depot at every dip. With the help of a sack of 50lb sand, a 79 cents bag of nails, a 99 cents 4 feet fluorescent light tube... it dodges Amazon's attention... or... will it? Well, I made enough people mad at me by recommending ATHM around 115, screw up additional by Home Depot wouldn't hurt too much anymore. They said that friends come and go; enemy accumulates. So true.
