M2 PRESSWIRE-11 June 1999-3COM: 3Com President Bruce Claflin outlines key emerging network technologies during CAMP conference keynote (C)1994-99 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

* Converged Networks, High Bandwidth Technologies to Change User Experience

Rosemont, Ill. -- "Networks will soon become as commonplace as electricity, and as necessary, available, affordable and easy to use as today's telephone network," said 3Com (Nasdaq:COMS) President and COO Bruce Claflin today in a keynote address to CAMP Expo '99 in Rosemont, Ill. "As networks become more pervasive and accessible, people's quality of life and well-being will be substantially improved."

During his remarks, Claflin stated that achieving a new level and quality of personal access will depend on the deployment of converged networks, or combining the current parallel voice, video and data communications systems on a single network infrastructure. "Converged networks will offer a fundamentally lower total cost of ownership, and the ability to deliver voice, video and data applications, including e-commerce, distance learning, next-generation call centers and telemedicine."

Claflin explained that the new applications supported by converged networks will make it possible for users to collaborate, learn, and transact business in real time across the globe, unlocking significant competitive advantages, and enabling entirely new ways and methods of doing business.

"Converged networks are not only something for the future - they are being deployed in enterprises today to achieve both telecommunications cost savings and competitive advantage," Claflin said. "Widener University, for example, is using a 3Com converged network to provide easy access to library files and multimedia CD-ROMs and Web databases, as well as handle their voice traffic."

While outlining several new emerging networking technologies, including VoIP (voice over Internet protocol), LAN telephony and handheld Internet access, Claflin discussed the potential impact of broadband access. Broadband access enables multiple signals to share the bandwidth of a single medium, allowing, for example, the transmission of voice, data and video signals over a single conduit, such as cable.

"Both cable and DSL [digital subscriber line] bring high speed Internet access at affordable price points to both consumers and small businesses," Claflin said. "With rapidly expanding rates of availability, cable and DSL modems represent a significant growth opportunity in the networking market."

3Com yesterday confirmed that its G.lite capable ADSL product line is interoperable with numerous vendors' central office products and several G.lite platforms collectively addressing more than 90 percent of the expected worldwide G.lite market. 3Com also announced in April that its Cable Modem CMX was awarded CableLabs certification, ensuring interoperability with other certified cable modems and systems from multiple manufacturers.
