RE: "Microsoft has not created a single successful business ever since they hit the jackpot of desktop OSs."

Tony,

I disagree. I have the impression MS OS was MFST's main revenue for many years until approximately mid-90's when MS-Apps became a greater or near equal player I believe?

MS-Office contributes approximately 1/3 of MS's entire revenue base, and this excludes individual application sales (i.e. 1/3 revenue excludes revenue from the individual packages of MS-Excel, WinWord, and MS-PPT)

Also, MS was the largest/most successful Mac application developer too. (I haven't checked this figure recently so would be hesitant to say they still are after Apple's transitions, but my guess is MS is still the leading Mac application developer)

RE: Intel
Intel hit another jackpot when they transitioned away from memory and into CPU. i.e. Both MS and Intel have demonstrated an ability to successfully transition/build additional businesses.

I agree Steve's post was a good read - especially the comment re: "They need to focus on getting the high-end market out of the PA-RISC, MIPS, Alpha camp and into the x86 camp."

Great weather today - on my way out.

Regards,
