You don't have to be an AOL subscriber to use their buddy list. It's available in many places, including Netscape's portal and RealAudio. The most widely used buddy list is something called ICQ. Although AOL now owns it, it's one of those things on which you won't see their name. You also aren't subjected to ads on the ICQ screens.
