I have not read Otto. As much as it is possible for any one person to express what another thinks about these things, I basically agree with the quotation your gave, though I would have put it in different terms.

I think that we are all agnostics to some degree and believers to some degree (with all deference to E, I include those who term themselves aethists), and it is only a matter of where the degrees lie, and how far along the path one has to go to be able to say of oneself that he or she is more believer than agnostic, or more agnostic than believer. As I said in an earlier post, I don't believe that there really are any true aethists. In my experience, once I have talked enough with them I generally find that they are either agnostics who aren't yet ready to admit that they are agnostics, or believers who desperately fear being believers and are fleeing wildly and as far and fast as they can from the Hound of Heaven.
