More People Using Mobile Telephones

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The number of subscribers to mobile telephone
services in the United States increased to 68 million in 1998, up from 55
million the previous year, the Federal Communications Commission reported
Thursday.

In its fourth annual report on competition in the wireless industry, the FCC
found an increasing number of customers in the mobile phones market --
which includes traditional cellular companies, a more sophisticated service
called personal communications and digital mobile radio services.

The commission also pointed to an increasing number of providers of such
services, leading to lower costs.

"Where there were once only two providers, there are now communities
with five, six and even seven carriers trying to sell their services," said FCC
Chairman Bill Kennard.

The mobile telephone market also generated more than $32 billion in
revenues in 1998, according to the commission.

Use of pagers also continued to grow. According to the report, the number
of pagers in service last year ranged from 50 million to 54 million, compared
with 48 million in 1997.
