Criticism of his campaign: ''Compassionate conservatism is a contrived cop-out,'' said Joe Andrew of the Democratic National Committee, who pigeonholed reporters as they stepped out of Bush's motorcade for the address. ''You don't beat Al Gore by trying to sound like Bill Clinton,'' GOP hopeful Lamar Alexander said in the text of a speech scheduled for delivery in New Hampshire on Sunday. ''People are tired of Bill Clinton's weasel words. If we want to win, we should give them straight, plain talk.'' Mrs. Dole, who petted pigs at a pork expo, called herself a ''courageous conservative,'' implying that Bush has failed to take stands on tough national issues. Bush, 52, is many ways the phantom frontrunner. Though dominate in a campaign he avoided until now, the son of former President George Bush is little-known outside Texas. He has held elective office for just 41/2 years and has little experience as a national figure. Polls show Bush with a wide lead over GOP foes, though pollsters say the Texas governor benefits from people confusing the younger and old Bush. A new Time magazine survey found 63 percent of Americans see George W. Bush as a lot like his father. A Newsweek poll found 49 percent of Americans feel that being the son of a former president will help Bush is his own campaign. The twice-elected governor also is being helped by a craving among Republicans for a winner, after Clinton beat his father in 1992, won re-election in 1996 and his party picked up House seats in 1998. Bush's blend of conservative politics couched in soothing, moderate rhetoric could help move the GOP to the center - much as Clinton refocused his party away from its liberal extremes in 1992.
