I'm not sure adding 8 more registers (1 more bit) to the SSE registers would have *really* made them that much more difficult. I mean the decoders for x86 are already a mess, what's one more variable length structure in there.. all see insturctions have 4 bits for the register. That would have been easy to add (IMHO).

Or maybe something using register windows, that would have been a relatively simple fix.

In fact I'm surprised no-one has done the register window thing with the x86 yet.. would be a great way to get more registers into the x86 by only adding about 2 instructions.
