If you were from Texas, the distinction between native and outlander would be simply stated as "folks" and "damn furners". :-)

About the "personal space" discussion between you and marcos. A while back I read a book by E.T.Hall,The Hidden Dimension, on the subject of the varying cultural attitudes toward personal space, and it explained an odd experience I kept having with a French friend. As we would talk, face to face and standing, I would keep backing up and and backing up, he would keep advancing, so after a few minutes of conversation, I would have crossed the room backwards trying to get a comfortable conversational distance from him, and he would have done the same forwards.

The book gave examples of the spaces felt appropriate in different cultures for various situations, and was very interesting.
