I think we knew that there would be at least two versions, 600 and 800 megahertz. What I didn't know (and it could be just because I don't pay attention as well as I should) was that it had been decided to roll out the 600 first, then the 700, then, finally the 800,

I suppose this is actually very smart for the reasons you state and that it sops up supply of chips at lower speeds, so not unsold glut until Intel is ready to say so!
