Joan, that IS the sentence I had in mind. However, spoken English has gotten so casual since I studied it that WHOM really seems quite formal, and that it why it sounded strange.

What really strikes me as TOO INFORMAL, is the wide acceptance of the word THAT instead of WHO in a sentence when a person is clearly referred to, as in "the boy that threw the ball", or whatever. I read that it is now common usage, and correct. Yuck!
