I like Healtheon blankmind but I just think msft could have obtained more of the company than they did for their 300mm investment. As it stands msft is only one of a consortium investing in Healtheon. Had msft gone in last year with that kind of money they could have had half the company. They were 6 mos too late. Imo the Allen Priceline investment was a good one... vulcan went in early which is preferable.

If you are an old-line company with a bunch of money you probably have to wait to invest, but msft has so much to offer a pre-ipo firm they should never have to pay premium prices like this.

BTW we had a conversation a while back about IPOs and underwriting firms etc. on the Amazon thread. E-toys had an offering price of around 30 (?) and of course they debuted at 70. The 40$ in between went to the underwriters top clients. The purpose of an IPO is to generate money for the company not create sweetheart deals for wall streets top clients. My point (and I do have one - lol) is that as a msft investor I would also look at the portfolio companies and the efficiency at which the $$ are reaching the destination firm. I don't know what the Healtheon deal was but there is a lot of waste in the internet sector thats for sure.
