Of course the fathers of the country (some of them my own) forefathers, set it up intentionally so I could believe the way I do. They build universities where I could learn to doubt Christ's existence, while believing in Jesus. I don't think any of them ever claimed to see a god, so they were operating (if they did) on naked unsupported superstition. Of course, all of them are dead -- the ones who believed in God and those who did not. They believed in slavery, or if they didn't were too scared of ambitious to salk out on the Continental Congress (although some enslaved their very children) or the Consitutional Convention. Perhaps they did the best they could. under the circumstances. They kicked Tom Paine out, as probably they would have kicked me out despite my not insignificant service to the state for disagreeing with their prejudices.
As for my friends here, most of them are reasonable in a way. They sometimes act silly in the beech glade. They sometimes lose their tempers temporarily. That they believe (if they do) in a God who kills his begotten human son along with the rest of us , I pity them. I do not consider Him or them to be reasonable. I wouldn't want Him beside me on a stricken field. I want some one alongside who will fight alongside me, not pretend to die for me.
