Terayon Cable Modem Enables Broadband Applications for Small Business; Demo at NCTA Shows Live Internet, IP Telephony and Video Conferencing
CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 1999--Terayon Communication Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:TERN) today demonstrated its cable modem system operating in a small office/home office (SOHO) environment, at the National Cable Television Association's (NCTA) Cable '99 annual convention and exposition. NCTA attendees participating in Terayon's SOHO demonstration can simultaneously engage in a live, two-way, full-motion video conference at up to 30 frames per second; surf the Internet at high speed; and make a voice-over-IP-based telephone call. This demonstration is enabled by a single, standard Terayon cable modem system. As part of the demonstration, the Terayon cable modem is shown working with a simple, low-cost server appliance that provides Internet connectivity, e-mail, web publishing and other web and network file services for small- to medium-sized businesses and schools. In conjunction with such products, Terayon's cable modems are a cost-effective solution for the data needs of the growing SOHO market. Terayon's cable modem system, based on the company's S-CDMA (Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) technology, has the proven two-way performance, robustness and Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities needed for the reliable delivery of interactive services required by the growing SOHO market. In particular, the system's 14 Mbps upstream performance is the best in the industry, allowing small business owners to host their own websites, transfer large computer files, participate in real-time video conferences and support other bandwidth-intensive, two-way applications. "The Terayon cable modem system is ideal for SOHO applications, providing telecommuters, small- and home-based businesses with reliable, high-speed, commercial-grade data services. We have designed our modems to deliver the Quality of Service, performance and reliability demanded to support business customers," said Shlomo Rakib, Terayon's president and chief technical officer. Terayon systems are deployed by leading North American cable operators, including Cablevision Systems, Rogers Cablesystems, Shaw Communications and TCA Cable TV. Terayon systems are also being deployed by major cable operators in Europe, Asia and Latin America, such as United Pan-Europe Communications (UPC) throughout Europe and Jupiter Communications in Japan. Terayon's cable modems have the high capacity and reliability to support a broad range of residential and commercial data services across cable plants, ranging from all-coaxial systems to hybrid fiber/coax (HFC). Terayon's systems incorporate sophisticated QoS capability, allowing control of bandwidth in precise increments. This allows broadband service providers to offer tiered services to their subscribers -- from residential Internet access to business services for data and telephony. Terayon's cable modem systems, based on S-CDMA technology, provide reliable two-way performance over the broadest range of cable systems. In addition, the high reliability of Terayon's S-CDMA technology provides cable operators with lower operating and maintenance costs. Terayon Communication Systems provides cable operators with reliable, high-capacity cable modem systems that support a full range of broadband services. The company, based in Santa Clara, Calif., USA, has sales and support offices worldwide, and is traded on the Nasdaq National Market under the symbol TERN.
