Microsoft Corp. admitted that naming applications for its Windows CE operating system -- slated for up to 10 million AT&T Broadband digital cable set-top boxes -- is a painful experience.

One presenter during last week's annual Windows CE developers' conference in Denver noted that the typical "WinCE" abbreviation for the OS looks like "wince," bringing a ripple of polite laughter from the assembled propellerheads.
