DiviCom Wins Time Warner Cable Digital Deployment
MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 1999--
C-Cube Subsidiary Delivers Digital Television to Largest System

Operator in the US

DiviCom(R) Inc., a C-Cube (Nasdaq: CUBE) subsidiary and the world's leading provider of open solutions for digital television, today announced that it has been selected by Time Warner Cable to supply digital head-end technology for its largest, state-of-the-art cable television system, which serves the New York City metropolitan area.

DiviCom will deliver the digital encoder portion of the cable head-end system. The encoders will work with Time Warner Cable's existing digital set-top and conditional access system (CAS) technology to launch a new era of digital television for New York audiences. The DiviCom/Time Warner Cable partnership will enable the cable company to combine existing analog cable programming with a new tier of digital service. Time Warner Cable will launch this new digital service to subscribers in the second half of 1999.

"We selected DiviCom technology based on the encoding system's technical performance and its ability to seamlessly integrate with our existing technology and provide a complete solution," said Larry Pastana, Time Warner Cable's Vice President, Engineering Manhattan. DiviCom's integration team is managing the real-time encoder installation process from conception through ongoing support by providing complete integration services to the digital head-end system that will be used at Time Warner Cable.

Another US Cable Win for DiviCom

DiviCom's compression, multiplexing, and network management system components will enable Time Warner Cable to expand the number of channels offered, deliver superior picture quality, and minimize the total hybrid fiber-coax (HFC) bandwidth utilized. DiviCom will supply MediaNode MN20 Multiplexers, MediaView encoders, and the Thesys Network Management System to enable the digital deployment.

"Time Warner Cable's choice demonstrates the viability and attractiveness of open architecture with a variety of suppliers for digital video functions," said Tom Lookabaugh, President of DiviCom. "In addition, other service providers, such as MediaOne, are selecting multi-vendor interoperable systems. These choices are significant individually and in combination -- a revolution has started in the cable industry."

Lookabaugh also noted that interoperability provides better and more flexible solutions for customers. "In many cases, cable providers are looking for new technology that integrates with existing systems. We are pleased to provide Time Warner Cable with the key technology and integration services to complete their new digital deployment," he said.

"DiviCom offers an alternative approach to the closed-loop systems of the past," said Lookabaugh. "We've combined our Silicon Valley experience in digital compression technology with a flexible open-system philosophy to ensure our customers can deploy best-of-breed solutions."

DiviCom Products Drive the Time Warner Cable Deployment

The following DiviCom products are integral components of the Time Warner Cable deployment:

The MediaNode MN20 Multiplexer: This technology is the core of the digital cable head-end system. The MN20 enables the combining and grooming of custom multiplexes of broadcast audio, video, and associated data programming. The MN20 also acts as a gateway from DigiCipher(R) and ATM networks. Additionally the MN20 supports DVB and DES scrambling.

The DiviCom MediaView Encoder Family: A comprehensive family of variable bit rate and constant bit rate MPEG-2 video compression systems. These systems represent up to four generations of breakthrough video encoding technology offering three tiers of standard definition compression solutions. All systems offer MPEG-2 video compression, audio and data channels, use sophisticated signal pre-processing and noise reduction, and are compliant with OpenCable, DVB, ATSC, and ISDB standards.

The Thesys Integrated Network Management Solution: A modular suite of user-friendly software packages that provide integrated, advanced element and network management. Included are tools for centralized network management, bandwidth management, control and monitoring of the components that comprise the digital video network.

DiviSys(SM) Systems Integration Support: The DiviCom integration team, with over 55 specialists, is experienced in digital video networking and offers its unique understanding of the communications and broadcasting applications. Support options include the following:

- Program management
- Budget analysis, site design, planning and preparation
- Equipment installation
- Interoperability testing and certification
- Parts inventory and management
- Signal reception and transmission integration
- End-to-end system testing
