C-Cube Brings Broadcast Timeshifting to Microsoft TV
CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 1999--C-Cube (Nasdaq:CUBE) today announced that its consumer MPEG-2 CODEC for the record, playback and timeshifting of live television broadcasts will support Microsoft TV.
C-Cube is the only independent hardware vendor with a single-chip solution for live television timeshifting on this new platform.

Microsoft TV, the client software member of the Microsoft TV Platform Adaptation Kit (Microsoft TVPAK), operates a range of TV-centric appliances -- from Internet terminals to advanced set-top boxes to integrated televisions.

C-Cube is developing software that will interface the DVxplore(tm) CODEC with Microsoft TV to provide features that include Electronic Programming Guide (EPG) based recording and timeshifting. With DVxplore inside MicrosoftTV-enabled set-top boxes, viewers and subscribers can fast forward, rewind and pause live television broadcasts or simply store the programs for future viewing.

"Microsoft TV allows the television industry to grow revenue with a new generation of service and entertainment offerings," said Fermi Wang, general manager of C-Cube's PC/CODEC Division. "DVxplore enhances Microsoft TV by taking it from a view-only platform to one that allows viewing, recording and manipulation of live television."

"C-Cube's innovation in timeshifting in conjunction with Microsoft's TV software for devices will allow consumers to customize how and when they watch TV," said Alan Yates, director of Platform Marketing for Microsoft Corp. "DVxplore silicon and software support for Microsoft TV enables manufacturers and system integrators to easily add this new dimension to interactive TV."

In April of this year, C-Cube announced co-development projects with Microsoft of Windows 98 software for low-cost MPEG-2 encoding products. At last week's Microsoft developer conference (DevCon), C-Cube announced that it will provide Microsoft Windows CE drivers and sample applications to Windows CE and DVxplore developers.

Availability

The DVxplore software interface for Microsoft TV is scheduled to be available from C-Cube in Q3, 1999.

About DVxplore

DVxplore is the first, and only available single-chip MPEG-2 and DV CODEC (encoder/decoder) to allow DVD-quality (MPEG-2 and DV) video recording and playback at consumer price points. With the DVxplore chip, manufacturers can incorporate sophisticated digital video recording and timeshifting features into consumer products.

Manufacturers can use DVxplore's encode capability to include recording via electronic programming guides (EPGs). The decode capability can be used for playback of rich, DVD-quality video of live or recorded material. Timeshifting capabilities including pause, fast forward, rewind and instant replay are enabled by the CODEC's capability for simultaneous record and playback of MPEG-2 video streams.
