I don't deny that the will can make a difference. The examples you cited certainly bear considering. The course of a serious disease like cancer can be steered to some variable and unknown extent by the intention and determination of the mind in the body. But there are times when the naked will to live - adapt, improvise, overcome - are simply swamped by the meat. Think of my Mickeyed example.
Hollywood plays mercilessly with your premise; the Good Guy in action movies is often almost absurdly impermeable to the slings, arrows and syringes of the enemy. The subtext is that his will is pure, strong and focused on a worthy task. It is beginning to p*** me off.
