Liberate and Comcast Enter License Agreement for Interactive Television Technology
First-Ever North American Cable Implementation to Begin in First Half of 2000

CHICAGO, June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- At the National Cable Television Association Convention ("Cable '99") in Chicago this morning, Liberate Technologies announced that it has signed an agreement to license its client and server technology to Comcast Cable Communications, Inc. for the delivery of interactive television services to Comcast cable customers. Comcast said it intends to begin initial implementation of interactive digital service through advanced set-top boxes in the first half of 2000.

The size and scope of the Comcast Agreement were not disclosed.

Comcast is one of the three largest cable system operators in North America, with systems currently serving over six million U.S. cable households. Comcast is an industry leader in the construction of hybrid fiber-coaxial systems and the deployment of new digital services.

"We're pleased to be working with Liberate as an open-standards software platform for our initial implementation," said Brad Dusto, Senior Vice President Engineering Operations, Comcast Cable Communications, Inc. "We strongly believe in open standards technology, which will best permit us to serve the evolving needs of our customers."

Comcast is the first North American cable MSO to license Liberate TV Navigator(TM) for DTV client software and Liberate Connect(TM) DTV Suite server software. The licensing deal with Comcast follows Liberate's previously announced $50 million private round of financing that included five leading cable companies: Comcast, Cox Communications, MediaOne Ventures, Rogers Communications and Shaw Communications.

Mitchell Kertzman, Liberate's CEO, said of the agreement: "We're pleased that Comcast has made a substantial commitment to Liberate, both through equity ownership and through this licensing agreement. As we move into a leadership position in information appliance software, it is clear that Liberate's devotion to Internet standards is paying off."
