The hard thing is standing your ground when people of your own culture try to adjust their comfort spot; I never notice it when it's people of another culture, but when it is other white Americans, who try to stand much closer or much further away, I do notice it. I know one white American female lawyer who gets so close that I wonder whether she is trying to intimidate me, deliberately or unconsciously. I know one white American male lawyer who prefers to get so far away that rather than sit across from me at a large conference table, he has sat on a chair against the wall opposite me.
