Predictably, the Chinese and the Russians now are dancing the Polka together.

This is another part of our Kosovo "victory" package which Clinton is certain not to publicize much since (according to National Insecurity Adviser Sandy Berger) the Communist leadership in Beijing has reformed its ways and is only interested in watching Mulan and drinking coke.

China's general visits Russian missile division

ITAR-TASS
June 12, 1999, Saturday Mikhail Shevtsov

China's deputy chairman of the Central Military Council, Colonel-General Zhang Wannian, who is on a visit in Russia, on Saturday visited a division of Russian Missile Strategic Troops near Novosibirsk.

He is the first Chinese high-ranking military official to visit a division of Russia's nuclear forces.

A Russian Defense Ministry spokesman told Itar-Tass that the Chinese military delegation was shown the Topol missile and explained its possibilities in overcoming the air defense of a "potential foe".

Zhang Wannian arrived in Russia on June 7. He has held talks in Moscow with Prime Minister Sergei Stepashin, Defense Minister Igor Sergeyev, Security Council Secretary Vlaidimir Putin, and has had a 30-minute telephone conversation with President Boris Yeltsin.

He visited the military academy of the Russian General Staff and a command post of the air force and air defense in the Moscow Military District.

The Chinese military delegation will fly from Novosibirsk to Vladivostok, where Zhang Wannian will meet commanders of the Russian Pacific Fleet on June 13. He will visit a naval base.

On June 14, he will be shown around the aircraft production association in Komsomolsk-on Amur, another city in the Russian Far East.

Zhang Wannian will visit Khabarovsk on June 15 to meet commanders of the Far Eastern Military District.

Later in the day, the Chinese delegation will fly home.
