Hi Eric,

Re: Opinions: Videoconferencing, An Important Market?

I've enjoyed your many useful contributions to the thread. I have an anecdote that I can add to your post regarding videoconferencing.

In the mid '80s I was in Juneau, Alaska working in the construction industry. I superindended a project to build out a teleconference center for Alascom, the ILEC of the "Great Land". A second facility was constructed simultaneously in Anchorage. Prior to construction, marketing managers at Alascom had approached various State and Federal agencies and were encouraged by the responses that to they received. About 18 months after the completion of the project I called the Alascom exec in charge of the facilities about getting access for some photos of my work. Over the phone, he blurted out: "Man, you really burst my bubble, I thought I was about to have my first paying customer." !?!!? Turns out that the bureaucrats would rather fly to Anchorage to get a chance to visit Nordstrom's, etc. than to be efficient and use the videoconferencing centers.

You said "Sadly, I dont think so. Used, but not massivly popular" And my experience indicates you may be overly optimistic <w>. You know the wags say: "Brazil, the Country of the Future!......
And it always will be."
I believe the same could be said about videoconferencing.

Best, Ry
