Tut and Com21 Band Coax Cable and Copper to Demonstrate High-Speed Internet Access for Multiple Tenant Unit Market Business Wire - June 14, 1999 06:16 MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 1999--
Companies Demonstrate Cable and Copper Wire Internet Access Solution for Apartment Residents, Home Offices and Small to Medium-Sized Businesses
Tut Systems Inc. (Nasdaq:TUTS), a leading provider of high-speed Internet access over copper wires, and Com21, Inc., (Nasdaq:CMTO), a leading supplier of system solutions for the broadband access market, today announced successful field trials of copper wire and cable modem technology to deploy high-speed Internet access to multiple tenant units (MTUs).
Tut's copper wire access concentrators, Expresso MDU and Expresso MDU Lite, and Com21's ComUNITY Access(R) cable modem technology are combined to supply a powerful, "always-on," Internet connection to apartment units of the Hamlet Apartment Building in Palo Alto, Calif. Residents use their existing phone lines to connect to the Internet while enjoying simultaneous voice service over the same line.
Expresso MDU, a "single box" access concentrator solution, sits in the wiring closet of multi-tenant commercial and residential facilities to provide cost-effective, "always-on" high-speed Internet access utilizing the existing phone wires of the building while allowing simultaneous use of regular phone service.
Tut's Expresso MDU Lite is a 4-port or 8-port multiplexing switch based on Tut's HomeRun(TM) technology that can be located inside or outside an apartment building to distribute high-speed data access over the existing copper telephone wires on properties that lack centralized wiring. Com21's ComUNITY cable modem technology provides the WAN Internet connectivity at speeds of 22 Mbt/s. Com21's technology delivers high-speed Internet access over cable enabling a wide range of services, including e-mail, e-commerce and Web browsing.
The combined copper/cable technology utilized in the Tut/Com21 field trials illustrates the ability to build an integrated solution for distribution and access. By capitalizing on the strengths of each technology -- the high speed of cable modems and the ubiquity and convenience of copper wires -- Com21 and Tut are showing the potential for a powerful solution for hybrid environments.
Through this collaboration, Tut Systems, already a leading provider of high-speed Internet access for multi-tenant units, and Com21, a leading provider of broadband access equipment, could offer a scalable, cost-effective, no new-wiring solution for property owners and multiple service operators (MSOs) who want to provide high-speed Internet access to MTUs.
"In many cases, the current costs of utilizing cable modem technology to deploy high-speed Internet services throughout MTUs is too high. The majority of buildings require the complete re-cabling of the building's infrastructure in order to use cable lines as the end-to-end solution," said Malay Thaker, general manager, Gateway Products Business Unit, Com21. "Because wiring is no longer an issue, MSOs can accelerate deployment of their services and generate income in a fixed amount of time," added Thaker.
"We are pleased to see another market leader such as Com21 demonstrating the ability to combine our copper wire technology with their broadband access equipment," said Sal D'Auria, President and CEO of Tut Systems. "Tut and Com21 are illustrating that they could give service providers and MSOs a 'plug-and-play' solution to deploy Internet services to a market they previously could not reach."
