Does DSL eliminate the need for ISP'S or is your dsl connect also an ISP folded into dsl. Someone has to provide the "dial up", don't they?

An ISP is still required. It depends largely on the regulators whether you can choose your ISP. I can't tell from looking at the Bell Atlantic pages if they offer open ISP access. (They are at bellatlantic.com. Another Baby Bell, USWest is required to offer open access to their DSL lines. I use their service and pay separately for the DSL line ($30/month for 256K line) and the ISP service ($20/month). (http://www.uswest.com/pcat/for_home/product/0,1084,43_1_3,00.html)

But nobody provides a "dial-up" since there's no dialing involved. You are connected to the internet (through your ISP) whenever your computer is turned on, just as you are with a cable modem.
