Philips to Develop Products for Microsoft Television Software Platform
08:20 a.m. Jun 14, 1999 Eastern
CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 1999--Philips Electronics today announced its plans to include the new Microsoft TV Platform Adaptation Kit (Microsoft TVPAK) in a new line of television set top boxes that will enhance the television viewing experience with rich new content, new forms of communications and E-commerce capabilities via analog, satellite, terrestrial or cable mediums.

This follows Microsoft's announcement of its new client and server software for the television industry, packaged as Microsoft TVPAK. The client software operates a range of devices, from set-top boxes to Internet terminals to televisions.

In making this announcement, Philips demonstrates its commitment to delivering innovative technologies for advanced digital television services as well as its leadership in providing the global market with the latest advancements in digital set-top technology such as Microsoft's leading edge software. A prototype Philips Internet TV set-top box based on the new Microsoft TVPAK will be on display at the Philips booth (No. 1728) at the National Cable Television Association (NCTA) Cable '99 show in Chicago.

"Philips, already a market leader in digital set top boxes including Internet, cable and satellite devices, has enjoyed a successful cooperation with both Microsoft and WebTV Networks Inc.," said Rob van Oostenbrugge, president of Philips Digital Video Systems. "We look forward to taking the relationship and the technology one step further by extending our reach with this application software into cable and satellite as well as Internet television receivers. Microsoft TVPAK also supports the Philips CryptoWorks(tm) conditional access system and Philips', new TV-oriented User Interfaces. With Microsoft TVPAK, Microsoft is delivering its rich expertise in software applications development to a broad range of service operators. At the same time we are able to offer service providers more choice than ever in the development of highly customizable digital set-top solutions."

Philips expects to launch products based on the Microsoft TVPAK platform in the cable service market by the middle of next year.

"We greatly value Philips' continued support for Microsoft TVPAK, our next generation set top box operating system," said Bruce Leak, president WebTV Networks Inc. and general manager of Microsoft Corp. "Together, we are helping to bring the television viewing experience to an entirely new level, and making enhanced services easier and more accessible than ever before. We're delighted to see such broad-based support for the new Microsoft TVPAK."
