Gary - I remember I had a "Smokey" album with the song on it, so I assumed he wrote it. I know what you mean - it's the same reason I would have said Marvin Gaye was the composer; both wrote so many great songs. "I Heard It through the Grapevine" was written by Barrett Strong.
