General Instrument and Microsoft Demonstrate Microsoft TV on GI's DCT 5000+ Advanced Interactive Digital Set-Top Terminal

Integrated Offering Available for Deployment by Broadband Network Operators This Year

CHICAGO, June 14 /PRNewswire/ -- General Instrument Corporation (NYSE: GIC - news) announced it is unveiling the result of its recent development activities with Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT - news), which will be deployed on GI's advanced interactive digital platform. At Cable '99 in Chicago, both companies are demonstrating the successful integration of the Microsoft TV software solution running on production versions of GI's new DCT-5000+ advanced interactive consumer set-top terminal.

Microsoft TV offers a rich application delivery and interactive navigation environment. When integrated with GI's industry-leading interactive digital platform, these products open up a new range of interactive services for broadband network operators to offer to their subscribers. These new services include Internet access, e-mail, e-commerce, enhanced interactive program guides, video-on-demand, IP Telephony, and other services enabled by GI's advanced interactive digital platform.

''We are excited about delivering Microsoft TV on such a sophisticated interactive digital broadband platform,'' said Jon DeVaan, vice president, Consumer and Commerce Group, Microsoft Corp. ''The General Instrument and Microsoft integration efforts have been extremely positive and are a result of both company's commitment to offering innovative and state-of-the-art digital services. Consumers are going to be 'turned on' when they see this product.''

GI is by far the world leader in supplying and deploying interactive digital broadband systems. GI has already shipped over 4 million interactive digital set-top terminals to over 100 broadband network operators. Working with these 100 MSOs, GI has deployed over 800 interactive digital systems passing over 37 million households. In addition, GI has already fielded interactive services over its commercially available platform including video- on-demand, e-mail, Internet access, and e-commerce.

''We have been working closely with Microsoft to develop and integrate enabling software for interactive applications since 1997. We are excited to offer Microsoft TV on our advanced interactive digital platform, as it is a rich software suite that can enable broadband network operators to utilize the full power of our DCT 5000+ platform to drive additional revenue,'' said Dave Robinson, Senior Vice President and General Manager of GI's Digital Network Systems business unit. ''We will begin shipping the DCT 5000+ in volume during the 3rd quarter of this year, giving MSOs the most powerful platform available in the world for delivery of interactive services and digital programming.''

GI's DCT-5000+ advanced interactive set-top provides new levels of advanced interactive broadband services in addition to the services offered on the DCT-2000 platform. With a 347 MIPS processor, 32-bit 3D graphics engine, integrated DOCSIS-compliant cable modem, and large memory cache, the DCT-5000+ delivers PC-like power and functionality to the home theater experience. Operators are able to offer additional revenue-generating services using GI's unique Triple Tuner(TM) architecture, which allows consumers to simultaneously watch TV, surf the Internet, and talk using the advanced IP telephony capability available on the DCT 5000+ platform.

Supporting all of this is GI's open, advanced interactive digital system. This allows maximum flexibility to broadband network operators to deliver content from any source and simultaneously deliver real-time interactive services. All achievable, because GI has built its interactive digital systems around open standards and interfaces and is fully OpenCable-compliant. This assures broadband network operators have full control to deliver and bill for interactive services. This open architecture, coupled with OpenCable compliance and the power of the set-tops being deployed, allow feature-rich software suites to be integrated and deployed. Software suppliers integrating with GI's platform include Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, Liberate Technologies, Sony Corporation, and other leading software companies.

General Instrument Corporation (NYSE: GIC - news) is a leading worldwide provider of integrated and interactive broadband access solutions, teaming with its business partners to lead the convergence of the Internet, telecommunications and video entertainment industries.
