One tidbit about timing of S&P 500 substitutions -- if you look at the "blurb" for post #0 on the current SI thread on AOL

Subject 24498

The person mentions (as of the date he or she started that thread -- 12/28/98) (at roughly 2:00 in the afternoon) that AOL was going to be added to the S&P as of 1/1/99 (effectively Monday 1/4/99).

12/28/98 was a Monday, so there was at least a few days notice.

(I am going to "descend" into the AOL thread (pre - 12/28/98), to see if I can find a time before the 28th when the news was "out").

(9:55 update - I guess I have to check the "old" AOL thread to see posts from before 12/28/98. Duh !)

Jon.
