Socket and MTDS Agree to Mate GSM Phones to
Windows CE Computers

Low Power Plug-in Cards and GSM Software Modems Will Offer Wireless Web Access

¶ NEWARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 14, 1999--Socket Communications Inc. (OTC: Bulletin Board SCKT and
SCKTW; Pacific Stock Exchange SOK) today announced the signing of an agreement with MTDS Oy, a data
communications company based in Finland, for jointly developing and marketing a version of the Digital Phone Card(TM), a
low power plug-in card plus software that will enable mobile computers powered by Microsoft's Windows CE operating
system to connect to the Internet and enterprise networks using GSM cellular phones. ¶ The GSM version of the Digital Phone
Card system will allow users to attach a Windows CE-based Handheld PC or Palm-size PC to a variety of GSM phones
including handsets from Ericsson and Nokia. Software provided with the system will include a GSM soft modem for Windows
CE, plus programs for handling SMS messages and synchronizing the handset's phonebook with Microsoft's contact
management software. Like Socket's recently announced Digital Phone Card system for data-capable CDMA cellular phones,
the GSM version of the system will give mobile professionals and service personnel location-independent access to the Internet
and instant synchronization with enterprise servers. Users will be able to run e-mail, browse the web, participate in group
scheduling, and transfer data from anywhere within a GSM network. Operating in over 200 countries worldwide and
supporting more than 150 million subscribers, GSM 900/1800 and PCS (North America) are rapidly establishing themselves
as dominant digital networks. ¶ The Digital Phone Card offers significant advantages over other connectivity options. The
standards-based interface eliminates compatibility problems resulting from the variety of external connectors built into Windows
CE-based computers. This simplifies inventory logistics for resellers and offers a free upgrade path for users who acquire new
mobile computers. The plug-in card also provides a durable physical connection that resists strain and vibration which can
cause sporadic operation with connectors based on external serial ports. Socket's Battery Friendly(TM) design allows users to
operate their digital phones up to twice as long as with other solutions. ¶ ''Socket's proven expertise in low power plug-in
cards and Windows CE technology complements our experience with GSM software,'' said Simon Tasker, vice president of
MTDS. ''Together we can create solutions that will have great appeal to the worldwide base of GSM phone users who want
to take full advantage of Windows CE-based mobile computers by staying connected wirelessly.'' ¶ ''We are excited to be
working with MTDS to develop a GSM version of the Digital Phone Card system,'' said Peter Phillips, marketing director for
Socket Communications. ''GSM's status as a leading platform for digital cellular phone networks makes this partnership with
MTDS a vital step in our program to support major network protocols for data-capable cellular phones so that we can provide
wireless connectivity solutions to the worldwide community of Windows CE users.'' ¶ Formed in 1993 in Espoo, Finland,
MTDS designs, engineers and manufactures innovative products for mobile communications and specializes in GSM software
modems for notebooks and Windows CE-based devices. The GSM protocol stack developed by MTDS for Windows CE
eliminates the cost and power requirements of a hardware modem, and the company's SMS and Phone Book Management
functions integrate features of GSM handsets into the personal information management software built into Windows CE-based
mobile computers. ¶ Socket Communications, Inc. develops and sells connection products for Windows CE-based computers
and other devices. Socket's products include the Battery Friendly(TM) family of plug-in cards for enhancing Windows
CE-based computers by adding networking, bar code scanning and printing, data communication, data collection, and wireless
Internet connectivity. Socket's products utilize the company's low power chip technology, making them ideal for
battery-operated mobile computers. Information about Socket's complete range of products is available on the company's web
site at www.socketcom.com.
