SEOUL--Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. here today said it has applied
leading-edge chip integration to produce new chip sets for digital
versatile disk (DVD) products. The chip integrate radio-frequency
amplifier, digital servo and data processor.

Initially, the DVD chip sets will be used in Samsung players, but the
Korean company will put the chip set on the marketplace later this
year, expanding sales into China and the Americas in the second half
of 1999. Samsung said it expects to ship a total of 1.2 million DVD
chip sets this year.

Samsung said it took two years to complete development of its DVD
devices. Until now, the Korean company had been buying its DVD
chips from outside sources and importing them into the country. By
producing its own DVD chip set, Samsung said it would save around
$150 million by 2002.

The company said it expects to compete directly with Sony Corp. and
Toshiba Corp. in the DVD chip markets. Samsung said the market
for DVD devices is expected to grow 80% a year, reaching total
revenues of $200 million in 2002.
