Using Dow Theory, the usual three phases of a bull market can be seen from the beginning of 1998 to April 1999 in the IIX. The three phases of the uptrend can be seen with the two secondary corrective phases. So long as each rally reaches a higher level than the one before it and each correction stops at a higher level than the previous correction, the primary trend is up--or a bull market.

Today, the IIX violated that rule and closed below the previous correction. The next step--eventually--is a rally which should fail before it reaches a new high
